Reading Intervention

At High Point Psychology, we are excited to offer a structured, research-based reading intervention designed to help children become
confident and skilled readers.

We explicitly teach...

  • how sounds connect to letters

  • how sounds work in words

  • how to read and spell words accurately

... to support strong foundational reading skills.

Sessions are offered one-to-one, allowing your child to receive uninterrupted attention and instruction they might not get in a large classroom.

Each session includes a mix of hands-on spelling practice, guided reading, and letter-sound association

Our goal is to teach your child to independently apply their acquired skills to words, rather than memorizing and guessing words based on how they look.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?

The first session consists of an initial reading check-in to find where your child is at, and confirm they'll be a good fit for the program. We'll also explain the program and answer any questions you have.

Once we have a good idea of your child's starting point, we will book their sessions in advance. Research indicated that the frequency of reading practice matters more than the amount of time per session. We've designed our program to be 45 minutes in length, with one session per week. More sessions are always available, but one session per week is a great place to start!

What age range is this program for?

Our sessions are offered to children in Kindergarten through Grade 4. Higher grades struggling with reading skills below Grade 4 may be considered. We can discuss whether your older child will be a good fit.

How many sessions will my child need?

Because reading intervention is an ongoing process, there are no specific total numbers of sessions. However, once a child has attended ten consecutive sessions, we will provide a progress report to review with you on the 11th session. This report will compare your child's reading level from the initial check-in session to their current level, so you can see their progress over time.

Who provides these sessions?

Our sessions are conducted by our Learning Specialist, Brianna, who received specialized training during her Masters program in School and Applied Child Psychology at the University of Calgary. Reading intervention is not provided by or supervised by a registered psychologist. The intervention focuses on evidence-based learning strategies, and isn't the same as a psychoeducational assessment or therapy.

What does it cost?

Sessions are $45/session.

You can cancel or stop the intervention at any time; however, you may not receive a progress report if you cancel before the 11th session.

Still have questions? Reach out to Brianna!
